The Relationship Between Language and Worldview.

Case   : The relationship between language and worldview. There has been a ranging debate over the relationship between language and worldview, and especially on curtural affiliations in different part of the world. The main agenda is based on the origin of language. The unique features portrait by humans, and its essence in the development of variant cultures, beliefs, and practices.

And the writer wants to composed and essay which explain the origin of the languages its connection to worldview and its application in daily activities.

This story iis a true story from one of my lecture in 5th semester. At that time, he tells the class about his experience before he become a lecture in Gunadarma University. He had been a supervisor at one of the office in Central Java (Yogjakarta). One day, one of his employees always use the Javanese language in daily life. Using Javanese language is not wrong. However, it would be better if we are as a good person should be able to adapt the language of what language we use, and where we use these language.

As we know that language is a human system of communication that uses arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, and/or written symbols. Indonesia is a rich country in arts and cultures. Each area has different language. But we should remember that Indonesia language is the only common language for us as the people of Indonesia. One day, the supervisor is trying to reprimand his employee who always use Javanese language in the office with a subtle way. When the communicate, the supervisor always ask him with Indonesian language. But the employee is not sensitive to the way of the supervisor. The employee still use Javanese language in every activity in the office to communicate with the supervisor. One of example part conversation between the supervisor and the employee :

S       : apakah anda sudah mendapatkan informasi jam berapa kita akan rapat?

E        : kulo mboten paham pak. Soalle pak Jefri ijik neng Semarang

S       : baiklah. Terima kasih informasinya.

(*Kulo means I in English. Kulo more polite that inyong in Javanese language. But it sould be better if the employee answered with Indonesian language also).

The reprimand from the supervisor does not response from the employee. It makes the supervisor furious, and try to understand that it is something has become a habit of the employee in communication.

Whereas in supervisor’s opinion, office is a formal place, and he thinks that use Javanese language in the office is less polite, especially when talking with someone who have higher position,  it should use formal language also (although the office uprooted in the area of Java, it is not wrong to use native language).

From my lecture’s experience, we can analyzed that :

From worldview, as a good people we should to know and be able to adapt ourselves and how our attitude in communicating with who and where we stand. And if we could see from daily application, maybe in employee’s opinion, using Javanese language is not wrong, and it makes communication with the supervisor more intimate. Although, I did not blame one of them. It is just simply misunderstanding that happened because they have different opinions. Back to each individual to decide what is good and less good. Can not be denied that everyone has a different opinion with other people. Perhaps this incident just lack of tolerance with each others. The supervisor’s character is distinct, perfectionist, it makes the supervisor’s character less able to get into the character of the employee’s character who has a plain character, ordinary man, and less sensitive to the expectation of the supervisor.
